This month, CAN-DO, along with Tripple R Rescue will be transporting over 300+ dogs out of the Gulf Coast to no kill shelters around the US....we need help with donations to carry this out... keeping with our philosophy we will document how every dime is spent and the results of your compassion.... a detailed budget plan on this project will be posted this week... if you can't donate please just help us spread the word. We have been told that if we do not carry out this transport the dogs will be euthanized, we are not trying to be dramatic here but this is the reality of the situation and we need help. Here is what is happening. The Gulf Coast SPCA/Tripple R Rescue comes down to the gulf to hit the shelters that they usually hit. But, when CAN-DO's pet proposal and transporting became better known, We(CAN-DO) started getting calls from residents, some who have only a couple of dogs to some that have over 100 dogs that they have been caring for since after the storm. The call out that we are hearing is that they can't physically and or financially care for these animals much longer. They can't take them to the humane society or any other sheltering group because they are maxed out and chances are they will be put to sleep. The idea is to releave the burden from the shelters and the resident(s) who are harboring these animals before they are financially and mentally broke. You have 6 strays that you care for, now imagine that you have 15 strays that you are feeding everyday and your next door neighbor has another 20, this is just an example. We get at least 8 calls everyday about where to take these animals. We are tired of having to put them off. WE have the solution and we need help to put it into action.
Thanks

"We nearly finished the rebuild on this home when Grace passed away one Friday night. So many of the elderly are dying of 'broken hearts' as they wait to get back intotheir homes. The frustrations of 'wating' and getting no definitive answers are creating even more deppresion and the suicide rate is alarming. We need more folks down here more than ever. We need as much rebuilding happening as we do deconstruction. Any support is greatly appreciated. If you know of anyone with skills to rebuild, strongly encourage them to come down. Working for pay is acceptable if fees are resonable--so much gouging going on here. These families are desporate at this point. How do you raise children in those FEMA trailers--in front of their homes or worse, in the 'FEMA Parks'. I am asking for any support you can give. 90,000 square miles hit by this Storm. More than 1.5 million lifes effected. These folks need to get back some level of normalacy to their lives. In Peace and Caring, Niki"Thanks Niki, keep up the good work!!!

Letter from the field- PLEA FOR DRINKING WATER! Pearlinton, Mississippi:Bob Putnam
"Eric,
For the past 3 months every meeting that I've been to for unmet needs, I bring up the issue of bottled water. In Pearlington, all the residents are on well water. The well water is very cloudy and may or may not be contaminated. Many residents come to the distribution center looking for bottled water because they are afraid of the water coming out of the tap. There has been a dysentery going around through out the volunteer camps and the residents alike, the dept. of health think that part of the problem is the consumption of well water. This should not be issue 10 months later... what the hell is going on?!
Another reason for water is because the volunteers are dropping like flies from the lack of hydration. Bottle water would curb some of the heat stroke that we have been experiencing. Many of the faith based organizations here and throughout the gulf coast refuse to drink the canned water that is here because they feel that they are promoting the alcohol industry. Canned water is being provided by Budweiser. We need bottled water and we need now!"
Bob
This is not only frustrating for the residents and the volunteers but it is RIDICULOUS that in the United States, with all are resources, we can't get clean drinking water to these people...
Unfortunately, this is not just one isolated case. Ten months into this and we are still dealing with serious problems that are going unresolved and falling on deaf ears. Between the constant mismanagement of funds and the lack of media presence, we, along with the survivors, the volunteers and other organizations that have remained it is overwhelming. CAN-DO makes it a point not to sit back and complain or point fingers but if the media, like CNN, could pull themselves away from New Orleans and show that there are hundreds of other towns and parishes that are suffering like hell, then maybe the rest of the public wouldn't be so in the dark!

Press ReleaseHouse Passes Lantos Legislation to Protect Pet Owners in Emergencies
Tuesday, May 23, 2006
Washington, DC – The U.S. House of Representatives today overwhelmingly approved a bipartisan bill to help safeguard people with household pets and service animals in case of emergency.
The Pets Evacuation and Transportation Act (H.R. 3858), authored by Congressmen Tom Lantos (D-CA), passed by a vote of 349 to 24. Under the PETS Act, in order to qualify for Federal Emergency Management Agency funding, a city or state will be required to submit a plan detailing its disaster preparedness program that will include how authorities will accommodate households with pets or service animals.
“The devastation last year in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama brought unbelievable images into every American home night after night,” Lantos said. “The loss of life and property was staggering. But on top of all that, the sight of evacuees choosing between being rescued or remaining with their pets, perhaps even having to leave behind the service animals they rely on every day, was just heartbreaking. The work of my colleagues in Congress, along with the Herculean effort of various animal welfare organizations, will ensure not the only safety of household pets and service animals, but also of their owners in moments of potential fatal danger.”
The legislation is supported by the Humane Society of the United States, the Doris Day Animal League, the Best Friends Animal Society, and the American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). A Senate version of the bill, introduced last month, is now before the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.
CAN-DO proposal on animal trasport will be posted soon.
