“We nearly finished the rebuild on this home when Grace passed away one Friday night. So many of the elderly are dying of ‘broken hearts’ as they wait to get back intotheir homes. The frustrations of ‘wating’ and getting no definitive answers are creating even more deppresion and the suicide rate is alarming. We need more folks down here more than ever. We need as much rebuilding happening as we do deconstruction. Any support is greatly appreciated. If you know of anyone with skills to rebuild, strongly encourage them to come down. Read more

“Eric,
For the past 3 months every meeting that I’ve been to for unmet needs, I bring up the issue of bottled water. In Pearlington, all the residents are on well water. The well water is very cloudy and may or may not be contaminated. Many residents come to the distribution center looking for bottled water because they are afraid of the water coming out of the tap. There has been a dysentery going around through out the volunteer camps and the residents alike, the dept. of health think that part of the problem is the consumption of well water. This should not be issue 10 months later… what the hell is going on?! Read more

CAN-DO shines in Mississippi!
On 3/9/2006, CAN-DO attended the Governor’s Long Term Recovery Meeting in Gulfport, Mississippi. We were personally invited by the Governor of Mississippi and First Lady to to present our proposal on Community Revitalization Centers (CRCs). While representing CAN-DO, I had the opportunity to meet personally with Governor Haley Barbour.

We are proud to announce that the CAN-DO proposal for Community Revitalization Centers is now being used as a model by the state of Mississippi. Read more

UPDATE FROM EK & COZ

On the Jan 12th Cosmo and EK traveled to Iowa to pick up an RV to drive down to a family in Buras, LA. Lisa and Michael H. from Cedar Rapids generously donated the RV. We first arrived in St.Bernard’s Parish on Jan 14th to team up with Mark Weiner, Emergency Communities. Emergency Communities is an amazing organization that formed after Katrina to first provide food to the survivors of one of the most devastated areas, New Orleans’s 9th Ward. Emergency Communities opened their “Made With Love Cafe and Grill” on December 2nd and does more than just simply serve food. Read more
